About the Lab

AXEL – Augmented eXperience E-health Laboratory is a dynamic research lab that designs and develops immersive technology systems (such as virtual reality) for healthcare applications. We aim to serve Filipinos with disabilities by providing therapy through virtual experiences that help them accomplish therapy goals in a fun and engaging way.

The immersive nature of the interface disconnects the patient from reality where their perception of their disability is well-established, and puts them into a new environment that may have familiar elements but is ultimately a novel experience. By engaging in activities in such an environment they can rediscover their capabilities and improve upon them without thinking about what they could not do and having to do repetitive exercises because of it.

Immersive technologies may also help those with psychological and mental impairments by providing a means to expose the patient to types of sensory stimulus that are impossible or impractical to provide normally, such as virtually transporting them to various locations around the globe, or recreating familiar environments from times long past.
